Best Stretches for Kids

Cindy Murray, Director of Physical Therapy at AOSM, was recently interviewed by Fox 4 News regarding the best stretches for kids. The information is provided below, or you can view it directly from the Fox 4 News website by clicking here.

  • Calf Stretch - Stand leading with your right leg, with the left leg straight, the heel on the floor and the toes pointing forward. Lean forward, keeping your body upright and your left heel down. Hold for 10 seconds. Switch sides and repeat 4 times on each side.
  • Hamstring Stretch - Sit on the ground with your right leg straight in front of you. Bend your left knee and place the bottom of your left foot on your right inner thigh. Lean forward with your upper body towards your toes. It is important to keep your back straight, and not rounded during the stretch. Hold for 10 seconds. Switch sides and repeat 4 times on each side.
  • Inner Thigh Stretch - Sit on the ground with your legs spread evenly apart. Lower yourself to the center with a straight back. You should feel a stretch in your inner thigh. After stretching to the center for 10 seconds, stretch and reach with the arms over the right leg for 10 seconds, then repeat over the left leg. Repeat each position 4 times.
  • Quadriceps Stretch - Stand on the right leg, using a teammate for balance. Bend right knee and grasp with hand and gently pull up towards your buttocks. Be certain to keep your thigh straight in line with your body, and not bend at the hip. Hold for 10 seconds. Switch sides and repeat 4 times on each side.
  • Hip Flexor Stretch - Lunge forward in a half kneel leading with your right leg. Lean forward with your hands on your right thigh and your back straight. Drop your left knee down to the ground. Hold for 10 seconds. Switch sides and repeat 4 times on each side.
