Weekend Warrior Syndrome
Date Posted: 03/19/07
The ‘weekend warrior’ evokes images of the average 40-year-old playing touch football with the guys. But, it can affect individuals who are younger as well as women. The weekend warrior syndrome doesn’t discriminate by age or gender.
Who is the weekend warrior?
Someone who decides to “get off the couch” and participate in a sport for which their body has not been properly prepared – either by warming up/stretching and/or gradual training
So, how do you avoid being a Weekend Warrior?
- Visit your doctor. If you are planning to get off the couch and into an exercise program – get a checkup. It’s easy and you may not have to see an orthopedic surgeon after the weekend.
- It’s easy as 1, 2, 3… As a general rule, once a week will maintain fitness levels, twice a week provides some progress and three times a week is the best for real improvement in your personal fitness.
- Don’t be so INTENSE. For example, if you were a runner in college but you haven’t run a mile in 10 years – don’t do it. Gradually
build up to it – increasing the intensity of your workout. - Compete With Yourself. Not with others. There is no Olympic category for couch potato.
- Time Well Spent. Warm up. Cool down. And drink plenty of water. As you become fit, you can lengthen the amount of time you spend exercising.
- Change is good! Vary your program with different exercises … walking … weight-bearing exercises, swimming, bicycling, hiking, etc. It also keeps it fun and interesting.
